The Secret Service is one of America’s oldest law enforcement agencies, and seen drastic changes in its history for the better and worse. It was created into the presidential-protection unit it is recognized as after President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination; however, after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the Service radically upped it’s game. This once sleepy-agency transformed itself into an elite force of highly trained agents and officers that would go on to redeem itself on multiple occasions, most famously thwarting the assassination of Ronald Reagan. It wouldn’t last, however. By the election of President Barack Obama, the Secret Service was laden with cracks and pitfalls. Break-ins, armed gunmen, scandals, and even would-be assassination attempts became commonplace while the confused agency stood by. Future presidents, who were disdainful of public service, would go on to abuse the Service for personal and political gain. The author, Carol Leonnig, has interviewed multiple members of the Service to not just understand the problems within the service, but to tell the stories of those who have witnessed the problems firsthand and want the Service they know and love to restore itself to it’s former glory. Likes: I liked this story as it was a real eye-opener to the faults within the Secret Service, a law enforcement agency we scarcely hear about. Hearing the stories of heroism and tragedy at the same time drive home the point the author was trying to make, which I really appreciated. The details in this story are shocking and riveting, and really make your brain think harder about the world we live in today.
Recommendations: I would recommend this book to anyone above the age of 16, as there are references to prostitution, suicide, and other explicit content within the book that is not suitable for younger children. If you are a history buff, enjoy reading about law enforcement, or are just curious about the Secret Service, this book is for you.
