Plot: Heinz Adolf Oster has a great life in the 1930’s as a thirteen year old. He lives in a middle class family, has fun at school, and gets to eat vanilla flavored whipped cream(think of 1930’s ice cream) if he does something good. But that all changes when the Nazi party comes to power in 1933. Soon, Oster finds himself orphaned and sent to the most inhospitable, deadly concentration camps in the Third Reich: Auschwitz-Birkenau. Oster is put as a stable boy, and is forced to care for horses if he wants to stay alive. This book is about how he survived the death in Auschwitz, and what happened to him after the war.
Likes: I like this book since it is about history, one of my favorite subjects. The book tells Oster’s sorrowful tale in an artful way that makes the reader dare not take their eyes off the next page. The details of the book will shock the reader to the core, and truly show the horrors of Nazi Germany.
Recommendations: I reccomend this book to ages 15+, since the book is too graphic for younger readers and has content that is not suitable for readers of a younger age. If you have read “The Escape Artist” by Johnathan Freedland, you will enjoy this book.
