FASHIONOPOLIS: The Secrets Behind the Clothes We Wear(Young Readers Edition)

Do you wear jeans? Or do you prefer inexpensive t-shirts that you can get almost anywhere? How about designer clothes like Levi’s, Gap, or Disney? Guess what? While on the outside, the clothes made by these brands seem like they were made in a clean, safe space and don’t harm the environment, behind the scenes, infringement upon human rights and pollution occur all the time. The t-shirt that you are wearing right now was probably made in a small, hot, and dangerous room in Bangladesh, China, or a dusty, dilapidated building in L.A. Most clothing companies use harmful dyes and chemicals that turn rivers black and kill wildlife. Recently, people have been trying to change this and make the fashion industry safer and cleaner. This book has both the light and the dark sides of one of the world’s biggest cash cows: fashion.

Likes: I liked this book since it was an eye opener and revealed information that most people don’t even know. I also like this book since it had a well placed structure that helped favor its argument against sweatshops and pollution in the fashion industry.

Recommendations: I would recommend this book to ages 9 and above since, while this version has been formatted for a younger audience, some of the details in this book might scare or shock younger kids. If you like books that are on fashion or are against pollution, this book will be enjoyed by you.
