Plot: Lucy Carlyle is a girl living in a dark age of England. For around 50 years, ghosts have been coming back from the dead. Some of these ghosts are harmless and pose no real danger to people, while some are murderous and an misadventure with one can lead to catastrophic results. To help stop “The Problem”, agencies have been enlisting children who have sensitive talent(Sound, Sight, Touch) to find and contain sources, or the object that a ghost is tied to. Lucy joined Lockwood & Co, one of the smallest private agencies in London. Soon after her recruitment, she has a case in which she and Anthony Lockwood discover the body(and ghost) of a girl named Annabel Ward. The grisly discovery leads Lucy, Lockwood, and their churlish colleague George into one of the most haunted houses in England: Combe Carey Hall, notorious for its Red Room and Screaming Staircase, both of which are surrounded by mystery. Will Lucy and her comrades exit the Hall unscathed, or will other agents find their bodies? Find out…
Likes: I like this book since the story was woven artistically and has a thrilling and edgy plot. The jump scares at certain periods shock the reader, but the book isn’t horrifically scary. It is the perfect balance between scary and pee in your pants, hide under your bed, and have nightmares for a week scary.
Recommendations: I recommend this book for ages 10+ since the story and details might be a little(or a lot) scary for younger kids. Some details of the book are not appropriate for younger ages and the plot will be better understood by older kids.
