This book is written by Sibert Honor author Deborah Hopkinson. Sibert Honor is presented to honor distinguished non-fiction books for children. The book, as the title suggests, is about submarines in the Pacific during World War II. In the chapters if this book you will meet the USS Seawolf, the USS Canopus, the USS Spearfish, the USS Trigger, the USS Wahoo and the USS Tang. You will also read the anecdotes of sailors stationed on these submersible killers and their stories and opinions about them. Faulty torpedoes, deadly depth charges, destroyers, and aircraft were just a bit of the danger that posed against these warships. Yet the men(and animals)aboard persevered and helped bring an end to the Second World War.
Likes: I like this book since it is on WWII and that is one of my favorite subjects. I also like this book since it paints a vivid picture into the mind. It makes you feel like you’re seeing the events unfold from the eyes of the submariners themselves. The word choice on this book is amazing and descriptive, perfect for this genre. There are also wartime photos from the era showing the submarines, their two legged sailors(and a few four-legged sailors!)soldiers, and much more.
Recommendations: I recommend this book to 9+ since the context will not be as easy for younger kids. I would also recommend this to someone who likes history or WWII, since it contains both.
