Plot: This book by Rita Williams-Garcia is about three sisters who are trying to find their mother who abandoned them. The story is about three African-American girls, Delphine, Vonetta and Fern during 1968 who visit Oakland, California and meet their real mother without knowing her. The book talks about how these three girls were treated because of the color of their skin, how they faced discrimination and racism.
Likes: I like this book because it talks about American history and makes the readers feel what it was to go through all the discrimination and injustices as a person of color. The story teaches kids to be kind and respectful and how to face difficult times. However, I did not love this book because it lacked humor and I think it’s too serious.
Recommendation: I recommend this book to older kids, 9 years and above since the story is complex and mature. Anyone who likes historical fiction will like this book, because it talks about life during the 1960s. The story gives you a feel of what life was in America in those times.
